Top 10 Asian Stocks To Invest In 2014

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) is basically unchanged after China reported a trade surplus in April. Alcoa (NYSE: AA  ) stock is up on the news, as a stronger Chinese economy means more demand and higher prices for aluminum. As of 1:15 p.m. EDT, the Dow was up 11 points to 15,067. The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC  ) was up four points to 1,630.

There were no U.S. economic releases today. China reported that its exports grew 14.7% in April, above March's 10% rise, which was enough to swing China back to having a trade surplus. In March, China surprised investors after it reported an $884 million trade deficit, increasing investors' fears of a slowdown in China. April's growth in exports led China to report a trade surplus of $18.16 billion. If the numbers are accurate, this is a good sign for China's economy; however, some analysts are questioning whether the numbers are too good to be true. The growth in exports is in contrast to the HSBC purchasing managers index, which showed that new export orders dropped during the month. That said, Asian markets are up nearly 1% on the news.

In terms of clinical data, small-cap biotechnology company Immunomedics (NASDAQ: IMMU  ) jumped by double digits after reporting early stage, but nonetheless positive, data from its antibody-drug conjugate program. Two of Immunomedics' ADC's, IMMU-130 which is targeted at metastatic colorectal cancer, and IMMU-132, which is being tested on 13 different cancer types, demonstrated tumor shrinkage and some partial responses. We're still a long way from an approval, but ADC's certainly look like one pathway to effectively treating cancer. Make sure this is a company you've added to your Watchlist.

Another under-$10 stock that's starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Immunomedics (IMMU), which is focused on the development of monoclonal antibody-based products for the targeted treatment of cancer, autoimmune and other serious diseases. This stock is off to a very bullish start in 2013, with shares up sharply by 110%.

If you take a look at the chart for Immunomedics, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending decent for the last month, with shares moving higher from its low of $4.85 to its recent high of $6.54 a share. During that uptrend, shares of IMMU have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. This uptrend is coming after shares of IMMU downtrended during July from $6.91 to that $4.65 a share low. Shares of IMMU are now starting to push within range of triggering a big breakout trade.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in IMMU if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $6.54 a share and then once it clears its 52-week high at $6.91 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that registers near or above its three-month average volume of 1.15 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then IMMU will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $8 to $10 a share, or possibly even north of $10 a share.

Traders can look to buy IMMU off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day at $5.52 a share or below more support at $5 a share. One can also buy IMMU off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Immunomedics (NASDAQ: IMMU  ) develops monoclonal antibodies for the treatment of cancer, autoimmune disorders, and other life-threatening diseases. The company has six products in clinical trials for a variety of diseases. Shares of Immunomedics have fallen hard and fast since the company announced the termination of a licensing deal with Takeda Pharmaceutical over veltuzumab last month. Even positive clinical trial results for 90-Y clivatuzumab, a treatment for advanced pancreatic cancer, failed to slow the fall. And last week, the pace of the decline picked up to the tune of a 15% drop on heavy volume.

LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- With the yen holding on to its gains and investors cautious as earnings season kicks off, Japanese stocks slid lower Friday after closing the previous day with some late-session gains. The Nikkei Stock Average (JP:NIK) fell 0.9% to 14,358.28, with the Topix down 0.8%, as the dollar bought 97.36 yen, little changed from 24 hours earlier. The relatively strong yen weighed on some names with high global exposure, as Sharp Corp. (JP:6753) (SHCAF) lost 1%, Pioneer Corp. (JP:6773) (PNCOF) dropped 1.6%, and Bridgestone Corp. (JP:5108) (BRDCF) fell 1.2%. An outlook cut from Canon Inc. (JP:7751) (CAJ) helped send its shares down 1%, while rival Nikon Corp. (JP:7731) (NINOF) lost 1.8%, though Olympus Corp. (JP:7733) (OCPNF) gained 1%. Telecoms were weak, with Softbank Corp. (JP:9984) (SFTBF) falling 2.5%, KDDI Corp. (JP:9433) (KDDIF) down 1.7%, and NTT DoCoMo Inc. (JP:9437) (NTDMF)

Nikon's story is similar to what's plaguing its Japanese rival, Canon (NYSE: CAJ  ) . Canon's stock has nosedived by 20% year to date, but the stock's recovered nearly 3% over the past month. Don't let appearances fool you: The company slashed its full-year sales and profit forecasts back in July, as the worldwide camera market has slumped, and as smartphones continue to take over this aging niche. Canon's route back to respectability looks like a treacherous climb.

    Company performance
Here's the thing: It will be expensive and difficult for companies to comply with this rule. Some are ready. Others are not.

Canon (NYSE: CAJ  ) ranks among the worst performers in an analysis from The Enough Project. Among other shortcomings, the company does not identify smelters in its supply chain, and does not participate in any programs to source conflict-free minerals from the DRC region. IBM (NYSE: IBM  ) falls in the middle of the pack when compared to other electronics companies. IBM also has not identified the smelters in its supply chain and has no policy requiring its suppliers to use conflict-free smelters. However, the company is working meaningfully to improve traceability in the region. Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE: AMD  ) is among the top performers in Enough's rankings. It was one of only six companies to pilot the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development's due diligence guidance on conflict minerals. While it still has some work to do to comply with the SEC's rule, the company is well on its way. The gold standard, however, goes to Intel (NASDAQ: INTC  ) . The company is at the top of Enough's ranking, and has been working on dealing with the conflict mineral issue for some time now. Intel is one of the few companies to publish and audit its smelters, and was the first company to commit to making a fully conflict-free product from the DRC by 2013. Intel has demonstrated genuine leadership in this area.

It's worth noting that in some cases, shareholders move on this issue even if the regulatory environment is unsettled. Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO  ) had a shareholder resolution on its 2012 proxy ballot related to conflict minerals. While Cisco was far from the worst performer -- the company has a conflict minerals policy that includes a requirement for conflict-free smelters -- the proponents wanted Cisco to study the feasibility of
