The S&P 500 entered this week on a six-day winning streak. Now the benchmark index has lost ground for two consecutive days for the first time since the last two days of October. Does this statistically irrelevant losing streak portend doom?

The S&P 500 fell 0.2% to 1,787.87 today, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped 0.1% to 15,967.03, ending a four-day winning streak.

Big losers included Best Buy (BBY), which fell 11% to $38.78 after it said margins would get hit by holiday discounts, Campbell Soup (CPB), which fell 6.2% to $39.20 after reporting lousy earnings, and Jacobs Engineering (JEC), which fell 5.8% to $60.03 after it reported earnings that missed analyst forecasts. Tyson Foods (TSN) gained 4.6% to $30.78 a day after beating earnings forecasts, while Boston Scientific (BSX) after one of its medical devices was approved by European regulators.

    The medical-device business is key to the operation of Abbott Laboratories. Sales of its drug-eluting stents and related products business were down 15% in the U.S. as the company not only competes against Boston Scientific (NYSE: BSX  ) and Medtronic (NYSE: MDT  ) , but also against other options that patients have to treat coronary arteries, including doing nothing. Sales of drug-eluting stents at all three medical-device makers have dropped recently as doctors perform fewer procedures. The winner appears to be Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ  ) , which�exited the drug-eluting stent business altogether two years ago.

    Elise Amendola/AP Pfizer reported lower-than-expected quarterly earnings and revenue, and the largest U.S. drugmaker trimmed its full-year profit outlook, sending its shares down 3 percent. The company said on Tuesday that it earned $2.75 billion, or 38 cents a share, in the first quarter. That compared with $1.79 billion, or 24 cents a share, a year earlier, when it took charges to boost productivity and address legal matters. Excluding special items, Pfizer Inc. (PFE) earned 54 cents a share. Analysts on average expected 55 cents. Revenue fell 9 percent to $13.5 billion, below Wall Street expectations of $13.99 billion. Demand for Pfizer's Prevnar 13 vaccine against pneumococcal bacteria fell because of wholesalers' purchasing patterns, the company said. Pfizer said it expected full-year earnings of $2.14 to $2.24 a share, down from its previous forecast of $2.20 to $2.30. It noted that the falling Japanese yen was hurting sales in that important market. Sales of Prevnar 13, the company's third-biggest product, fell 10 percent to $846 million. By contrast, sales of the vaccine used to prevent pneumonia and other infections had soared 19 percent in the prior quarter. Moreover, Pfizer said sales grew only 5 percent in emerging markets due in part to reduced government purchases of Prevnar 13 and of the company's Enbrel treatment for rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis. Emerging market sales had jumped 17 percent in the prior quarter. Sales of generic medicines, which Pfizer calls established products and sells mainly overseas, fell 16 percent to $2.35 billion. That was also a reversal from the prior quarter, when they rose 3 percent.     A biopharmaceutical stock that's starting to trend within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Alcobra (ADHD), which is engaged in the development and commercialization of its proprietary drug, MG01CI, to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. This stock has been on fire so far in 2013, with shares up huge by 126%.

    If you take a look at the chart for Alcobra, you'll notice that this stock has been trending sideways and consolidating over the last month and change, with shares moving between $14.78 on the downside and $18.75 on the upside. Shares of ADHD have now started to uptrend a bit over the last few weeks, with shares moving higher from its low of $15.05 to its recent high of $18.45 share. That move has started to push shares of ADHD within range of triggering a big breakout trade above the upper-end of its recent sideways trading chart pattern.

    Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ADHD if it manages to break out above its 50-day moving average of $17.79 a share, and then once it takes out some more key overhead resistance levels at $18.45 to $18.75 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 74,869 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then ADHD will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $22 to $24 a share. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give ADHD a chance to re-test or possibly take out its all-time high at $26.96 a share.

    Traders can look to buy ADHD off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some near-term support levels at $16.17 to $15.05 a share, or around $14.78 a share. One could also buy ADHD off strength once it starts to clear those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

    Since presenting at the Deutsche Bank Healthcare Conference two weeks ago, shares of Regulus Therapeutics have been absolutely on fire. A mixture of ASCO and IPO fever have revived the love for newer issues, and having big name pharmaceutical companies gobbling up a majority of its IPO'd shares certainly helps its cause.

    It's occasionally very difficult to value biotech stocks, because of the wide range of outcomes possible given their pipelines. Other times, as in the case with Regulus Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: RGLS  ) , I bang my head against a table and wonder what the heck investors are thinking.
