10 Best Canadian Stocks To Buy Right Now

SunPower (SPWR) is one of the largest integrated solar companies in the world and produces the most efficient crystalline silicon solar panels. The company has seen a large stock price appreciation in the last one year, as it has recovered from the brink of bankruptcy. SunPower has become more competitive with Chinese crystalline solar panel makers like Canadian Solar (CSIQ), Yingli Green Energy (YGE), etc. by expanding rapidly into the downstream solar development segment and winning some large multi-year utility deals. The company has also been helped by continued capital support from the backing of its parent Total (TOT). This has proved to be extremely important as the solar development business is capital intensive and the industry has been suffering huge losses in the last couple of years. I had advocated buying SunPower around six months ago as the best US solar stock. The stock has risen by more than 100% since that point in time and I think it is the right time to take profits off the table. Investors can consider some other equally good solar stocks such as ReneSola (SOL) and JinkoSolar (JKS) which have good fundamentals and have not seen a sharp stock price increase.

One stock that has been in the official Magic Formula (MFI) screen for the past month or so has piqued my interest: Kraft (KRFT).

The MFI screens, particularly the $50 million screen, are usually reserved for deep value stocks. Usually you find stocks in here suffering serious adverse business developments (LQDT, NSR, etc.), operate in out-of-favor industries (APOL, STRA, etc.), have volatile and difficult-to-predict future prospects (PDLI comes to mind), or are just simply cheap quantitatively (CSCO, COH, et.al.).

Has the market lost faith in Ackman that quickly? Granted, the media has had a field day over the J.C. Penney (NYSE: JCP) debacle, not to mention the virtual implosion of his Herbalife (NYSE: HLF) short. However, Ackman is coming off one of his biggest wins with Canadian Pacific Railway (NYSE: CP), which also happens to be in the industrials sector. His Pershing Square hedge fund managed to make 2.5 times its money in just around two years at Canadian Pacific.

Another prime choice in the world of railroad stocks could be the chief Canadian rival of CNI:Canadian Pacific (CP). Like CNI, CP has made crude-by-rail a top contributor to its revenues and profits. Canadian Pacific has expanded into new terminal partnerships and projects, and its crude shipments should reach 70,000 oil-tank cars by the end of the year. Oh, and that number will expand roughly to 140,000 by the end of 2015.

CEOs were replaced at Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. (CP) and Procter & Gamble Co. (PG) after activist investor Bill Ackman pushed for shakeups. Greg Taxin Clinton Group Inc. prompted management changes at Nutrisystem Inc. (NTRI) and Wet Seal Inc. (WTSL) in the past year.

A huge net-net like Ingram Micro (IM) with nine out of ten years of profits in the last decade is pretty unusual. And Ingram operates on a razor-thin margin. It usually makes about one cent in profit for every dollar of sales.

My take is that Qualcomm has rapidly established itself as the de facto standard for connecting with medical devices. The company isn't doing it alone, though. It teamed with Ingram Micro (NYSE: IM  ) , the world's largest technology distributor, to support the implementation, logistics, and financial services related to the 2net hub and platform. This partnership should help propagate Qualcomm's technology more effectively than the company could have done on its own.

    4. Crown Castle International (NYSE: CCI  ) , P/E of 140
Crown is one of the major players in the industry. By "tower industry," I'm referring to the towers that now dot our landscape to help ensure wireless data can be transmitted with ease.

The top hedge funds were also hot on railroad company Union Pacific (UNP, Fortune 500) and cell phone tower owner Crown Castle International (CCI). The funds plowed $1.1 billion into Crown Castle, which made news in the quarter when it bought the rights to towers owned by AT&T (T, Fortune 500) for $4.8 billion.

  • [By Matthew Smith]

The two names which come to mind as potential buyers are American Tower (AMT) and Crown Castle International (CCI) as the assets would be natural for them to purchase. It would be a large transaction though which would be about 1/6th the current market cap of American Tower and 1/4th the size of Crown Castle's market cap. Another possible buyer could be a hedge fund, and although there are few names out there specializing in this industry, at the end of the day it is a real estate game and all about the leverage and cash flows. Readers should watch this story because if AT&T does in fact sell its towers, it might be set to make a move on the chess board.
