Top 5 Beverage Companies To Own In Right Now

Would you like a sandwich with your coffee?

Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX  ) just booked strong revenue growth for its fiscal second quarter. And the rise was fueled in part by one unlikely star product: panini sandwiches.

The coffee king's sales jumped higher by 7% in the U.S. Of course, popular espresso beverages -- like the vanilla spice latte and hazelnut macchiato -- did their part by selling well. But food also played a big role in delivering Starbucks' outsized sales gains.

Food and prepaid cards pair well
That's partly thanks to the company's prior success in selling massive amounts of prepaid cards. Customers loaded more than $1 billion onto their loyalty cards in the final three months of 2012, and gift cards were one of the most popular presents over the holidays. Those trends added up to billions of dollars of Starbucks money just sitting in people's pockets, ready to be spent.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Chuck]

PepsiCo Inc. is a strong defensive play with steady and stable growth and dividend yield. It provides investors with a place to park low-risk capital.

The stock has had a tight trading range in the last year. It is extremely liquid and has a liquid options market.

Let’s buy our exposure while the market is weak overall, but use the market to help average into this one. If you want to invest 3% of your low-risk portfolio, let’s buy 2% at market now.

For the last third, let’s put in a limit order at 5% below your first fill.

Pepsi also makes a great covered-call vehicle. The stock is not going to run away from us if we cap our near-term upside, and if it did, we can always repurchase it on weakness.

PepsiCo, Inc. (PEP) manufactures, markets, and sells various foods, snacks, and carbonated and non-carbonated beverages worldwide. The company operates in four divisions: PepsiCo Americas Foods (PAF), PepsiCo Americas Beverages (PAB), PepsiCo Europe, and PepsiCo Asia, Middle East and Africa (AMEA). PAF divisions. The company has raised distributions for 38 years in a row and yields 2.90%. The company is attractively valued at the moment at 16.60 times earnings.

  • [By Steven Goldberg]

PepsiCo (PEP, $82.51, 2.6%) will likely never catch up with number one Coca-Cola (KO) in the soft drink business, but it is the dominant player globally in salty snacks. Brands include Lay's, Ruffles, Doritos, Cheetos and Tostitos, not to mention Quaker Oatmeal, Rice-a-Roni, Gatorade and Tropicana. The stock trades at a somewhat pricey 17 times estimated year-ahead earnings.

  • [By ETF Authority]

Unlike its competitor, PepsiCo has a large exposure to the food industry. This has helped the company generate strong performance over the past decade versus Coca-Cola. I personally prefer the taste of Coke over Pepsi, however, and many consumers seem to have similar taste buds. PepsiCo tends to make large acquisitions, which have worked so far. Sometimes it tends to overpay them, like the recent acquisition of Wimm-Bill-Dann. PepsiCo is cheaper than Coca-Cola, and both have similar near-term prospects.

Advisors' Opinion:

Renowned trader, journalist and money manager Jon Markman finished one spot ahead of La Monica last year thanks to Hershey‘s (NYSE:HSY) 20% returns. This year, he’s trading in the sweets for emerging market pick Fomento Economico Mexicano (NYSE:FMX), often referred to asFemsa.

While Markman thinks the U.S. will struggle with austerity in the coming months, he also believes that if we head just a little bit south, we will find one of the greatest potential growth profiles in the world: Mexico, where Femsa is based.

“Femsa caters to more than 1.7 million retailers and 215 million consumers, and is the No. 1 beverage provider in every region that it operates in. The firm has grown revenues by 16% annually for the last 10 years,” he explains.

In fact, last year, FMX tallied impressive 44% gains. On the next pullback, he says, it will be time to buy.

10 Best Integrated Utility Stocks For 2014

Holmdel, N.J.-based Vonage (NYSE: VG  ) has a new Chief Financial Officer.

On Friday, Vonage closed out the trading week with an announcement that it's hired away David T. Pearson from Deutsche Bankto become its new Treasurer and CFO. At Deutsche, Pearson spent nine years working as a managing director and head of the bank's Global Media & Telecom Group. Before that, he worked in Goldman Sachs' Technology, Media & Telecommunicationsgroup.

So he's got impeccable investment banking credentials ... for which Vonage is paying through the nose. In an SEC filing today, Vonage revealed that it's paying Pearson $475,000 in base salary, plus:

an annual cash bonus targeting 100% of base salary and two million stock options -- an equity award equal to nearly 1% of Vonage's shares outstanding

That last number is pretty staggering in size, and Vonage's share price is looking a little wobbly today, perhaps because of it. In fact, as of this writing Vonage's share price is down almost precisely in line with the size of the stock dilution expected from Pearson's hiring -- 1%.

Top 5 Clean Energy Companies To Invest In 2014

Thursday morning, Barack Obama met with Jamie Dimon, Lloyd Blankfein, Brian Moynihan, and other members of the country's largest financial institutions. Let me pause for a minute to let you digest the sheer number of pinstripes and massive egos that strolled into the White House.

While the full details from the meeting between the President and financial leaders weren't released to the public, it is encouraging to see there is at least some communication present on Capitol Hill. According to the White House, the group discussed housing, education policy, and clean energy financing. Although not explicitly stated, the bankers probably shared their thoughts on the new regulation, such as the Volcker Rule. Of these topics, bank leaders were surely heavily interested in the housing sector.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Peter Leeds]

We are currently seeing currency devaluations from USA to Switzerland and from South Korea to the eurozone. In America in 1960, $1,000 worth of goods would now cost you $7,360, according to the web site MeasuringWorth.com. I expect inflation to continue and, since precious metals are bought in American dollars, I anticipate higher prices for all metals.

I think Newmont Mining (NEM 0.00%) will be one of the biggest beneficiaries of this trend. It is currently producing and selling gold and developing new reserves all over the world. NEM posted net earnings of $2.3 billion in 2010 and currently sits on $29 billion in total assets. I think it could trade up to $89.50.

Libya without Ghadafi, much like Iraq after the removal of Hussein, will be much less stable. A power vacuum will cause Libya's already divided tribal nation to fragment into warring factions, set on competing for power and settling old scores. Meanwhile, America, Russia, and China will jostle for influence in this oil-rich flashpoint.

This will create higher oil prices, greater volatility, and a higher risk premium built into costs of the commodity. Due to less reliable overseas oil supplies, America will look to further increase exploration and production from friendlier sources, such as Canada.

I am expecting Questar (STR 0.00%) to be a big beneficiary of this trend. It is a leading producer and distributor of natural gas to the American domestic market. It is profitable ($36 million in Q3), and had strong 33% growth in third quarter earnings per share, year over year. It also sports a nice 3% dividend. My price outlook: $31.

A growing population (7 billion), and an increasingly sophisticated diet among China and other developing nations have led to rapidly increasing demand for food around the world. According to Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) data, China's per capita intake of calories, protein, and fat were below the world average in 1975, but are now well above the world average. Expect this trend to accelerate in China, as well as India, Pakistan, Indonesia, and other developing nations.

The problem is that there's not even close to enough food, while challenging agricultural environments routinely wipe out crops.

That's where Monsanto (MON 0.00%) comes in. It enables more food to be produced on smaller parcels of land with less water usage and limited crop loss. Global demand for MON's products and services just keeps growing.  I am expecting its $20 billion in assets and constant net earnings ($1.6 billion in 2011) to translate into further gains in the share price. My price outlook:  $94.

Dow May Open Flat as Markets Pause

LONDON -- Stock index futures at 7 a.m. EDT indicate that the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) may open a mere two points lower this morning, while the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC  ) may open down by half a point. Last week's strong job figures helped the CNN Fear & Greed index climb strongly: It closed up 13 points to 76 on Friday, placing it into "extreme greed" territory.

European markets edged lower this morning, but volumes were low, as London and Tokyo markets were closed for a public holiday. Among the big movers in Europe were German industrial gas producer Linde AG, which was up 3.9% at 7:15 a.m. EDT after its latest results beat expectations. Heading the other way was German utility firm E.ON SE, which was 7.1% lower after it forecast a 15% fall in earnings for the current year on Friday, citing lower power prices.

No major economic reports are due in the U.S. today, so investors are likely to focus on corporate news. Volumes may also be lower than usual due to the lack of London trading. Companies that may see strong interest today include Tyson Foods and Sysco. Analysts expect Tyson to report second-quarter earnings of $0.45 per share on revenue of $8.58 billion, while Sysco is expected to report third-quarter earnings of $0.43 per share on revenue of $11.1 billion. Other major companies due to report results today include Anadarko Petroleum, which is expected to report earnings of $0.93 per share on revenue of $3.4 billion after markets close tonight.

Berkshire Hathaway stock could also see active trading after Warren Buffett's firm unveiled a 51% increase in first-quarter profit after markets closed on Friday. The firm said net income rose to $4.89 billion from $3.25 billion during the same period of the previous year. Berkshire stock closed up by 1.25% on Friday and is almost 2% higher in premarket trading this morning. Other companies that could attract additional interest today include Intel, which is 1.2% higher in premarket trading after it announced that it's buying Stonesoft Oyj, a Finnish software company specializing in cloud-based security products, for $389 million in cash. BMC Software is up 1.7% in premarket trading after Reuters reported that it may shortly be acquired by Bain Capital and Golden Gate Capital.

Finally, let's not forget that the Dow's daily movements can add up to serious long-term gains. Indeed, Warren Buffett recently wrote, "The Dow advanced from 66 to 11,497 in the 20th Century, a staggering 17,320% increase that materialized despite four costly wars, a Great Depression and many recessions." If you, like Buffett, are convinced of the long-term power of the Dow, you should read "5 Stocks To Retire On." Your long-term wealth could be transformed, even in this uncertain economy. Hot US Stocks To Watch Right Now

LONDON -- The shares ofCarpetright (LSE: CPR  ) rose 2.4% to 265 pence in early afternoon trading yesterday after the FTSE 250 mid cap revealed like-for-like U.K. sales had jumped 5.6%.

Carpetright, the biggest seller of carpets and floor coverings in Britain, met market expectations by confirming gross margins were likely to improve by 0.2% this year.

The company's performance in the rest of Europe was less impressive, however, with total sales declining 10.2%, mostly due to "deteriorating economic conditions" in the Netherlands.

After suffering a disastrous blow to margins following the housing crisis, Carpetright said it would continue its plans to refurbish its U.K. stores, increase its product range, and focus on digital media marketing.

Oracle. This software service giant, which deals in a slew of databases, applications, product support, and other services, has also made some smart acquisitions, Resendes says. "The companies they've acquired--PeopleSoft, BEA, and Seibold--really round out the product line." Oracle's stock, recently $18, is trading slightly below what it was a year ago. Resendes thinks that share price could rise 25 percent.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By he Fiscal Times]

JDS Uniphase  (JDSU +0.85%), like Akamai, is a name that will be familiar to anyone who watched the big technology bubble of the 1990s take shape. It has been a volatile ride ever since, and the company's earnings are flagging, but the telecommunications technology provider, which specializes in optical products, offers rising revenues and adequate cash flow. The company got a boost in December from the decision by Piper Jaffray analyst Troy Jensen to boost his price target to $16 from $12 (the stock now trades at about $14 a share). Jensen's bullishness stems from a conviction that spending by telecom companies is about to take an upward turn, and that JDS Uniphase is likely to be one of the beneficiaries as its customers move to improve their network infrastructures later this year. JDS Uniphase climbed 16.2% in December.

JDS Uniphase (Nasdaq:JDSU) also beat street estimates on earnings and revenues when it reported its results in early February, ending up 38% in February. The company reported non-GAAP earnings of $0.12 per share compared to an estimate of $0.09 per share. It should be noted that the company lost $19.5 million on a GAAPbasis.

Galena Biopharma, Inc. (Galena), formerly RXi Pharmaceuticals Corporation, incorporated on April 3, 2006, is a biotechnology company focused on discovering, developing and commercializing therapies addressing unmet medical needs using targeted biotherapeutics. The Company is pursuing the development of cancer therapeutics using peptide-based immunotherapy products, including its main product candidate, NeuVaxTM (E75), for the treatment of breast cancer and other tumors. NeuVax is a peptide-based immunotherapy intended to reduce the recurrence of breast cancer in low-to-intermediate HER2-positive breast cancer patients not eligible for trastuzumab (Herceptin; Genentech/Roche). On January 19, 2012, the Company initiated enrollment in its Phase 3 PRESENT clinical trial for NeuVax (E75 peptide plus GM-CSF) vaccine in low-to-intermediate HER2 1+ and 2+ breast cancer patients in the adjuvant setting to prevent recurrence (Clinicaltrials.gov identifier NCT01479244). The Preven tion of Recurrence in Early-Stage, Node-Positive Breast Cancer with Low to Intermediate HER2 Expression with NeuVax Treatment study is a randomized, multicenter, multinational clinical trial that will enroll approximately 700 breast cancer patients. The Company Phase 2 trial of NeuVax achieved its primary endpoint of disease-free survival (DFS). On April 13, 2011, the Company completed its acquisition of Apthera, Inc.,(Apthera).

The Company focuses to start a Phase 2 trial comparing NeuVax in combination with trastuzumab (Herceptin) versus trastuzumab, alone, in a 300-patient, randomized study in the adjuvant breast cancer setting. The Company's second product candidate, Folate Binding Protein-E39 (FBP), is a vaccine, consisting of the peptides E39 and J65, aimed at preventing the recurrence of ovarian, endometrial, and breast cancers. On February 14, 2012, the Company announced the initiation of a Phase 1/2 clinical trial in two gynecological cancers: ovari an and endometrial adenocarcinomas. Folate binding protein! h! as very limited tissue distribution and expression in non-malignant tissue and is over-expressed in more than 90% of ovarian and endometrial cancers, as well as in 20% to 50% of breast, lung, colorectal and renal cell carcinomas.

In April 2011, the Company acquired Apthera Inc and its NeuVax product candidate. The Company focuses on developing a pipeline of immunotherapy product candidates for the treatment of various cancers based on the E75 peptide, the advanced of which is NeuVax, which is targeted at preventing the recurrence of breast cancer. NeuVax has had positive Phase 1/2 clinical trial results for the prevention of breast cancer recurrence in patients who have had breast cancer and received the standard of care treatment (surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and hormonal therapy as indicated). The Company had also initiated its Phase 3 PRESENT clinical trial of NeuVax for the prevention of breast cancer recurrence in early-stage low-to-intermediate HER2 breast cancer patients. NeuVax directs killer T-cells to target and destroy cancer cells that express HER2/neu, a protein associated with epithelial tumors in breast, ovarian, pancreatic, colon, bladder and prostate cancers. NeuVax is comprised of a HER2/neu-derived peptide called E75. E75 is a nine-amino acid sequence that is immunogenic (produces an immune response) and GM-CSF is a commercially available protein that acts to stimulate and activate components of the immune system such as macrophages and dendritic cells.

The Company also develops novel applications for NeuVax based on preclinical studies and phases 2 clinical trials which suggest that combining NeuVax and trastuzumab (Herceptin; Genentech/Roche) can increase antigen presentation by tumor cells by promoting receptor internalization and subsequent proteosomal degradation of the HER2 protein. The Company also is pursuing additional therapeutic indications for NeuVax that are in Phase 1/2 clinical trials. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Paul]

The maker of solid-state drives has $130 million cash in the bank, no debt, a $650 million market cap, and trades for just six times forward earnings. The stock collapsed in November when it announced that EMC had an inventory glut of STEC's SSD product. In other words, EMC ordered too much. Since EMC is the company's largest customer, it threw into doubt its earnings expectations. JP Morgan's analyst came out and said he still sees the company earning $2 per share in 2012 and put a $42 price target on the stock. Not bad for a $12 stock.

  • [By Curtis]

Stec is the only provider qualified and shipping product in the Enterprise Storage Market for Fibre Channel and SAS interface drives. While competition appears inevitable in the market in the future, the brokerage believes the company has a strong technological and qualification lead at the OEMs, which should enable it to maintain market share leadership in the future.

"Given our expectation that the Enterprise Storage SSD market is likely to be significantly up in 2011 over 2010, and STEC appears likely to maintain an edge over competition in terms of technology and, hence, market share, we believe STEC shares at current levels do not capture the potential upside in terms of market potential or competitive positioning," the analysts said.
