6 Tips for Women Who Want to Retire

Top 10 Growth Companies For 2015

Female executive calculating taxesGetty Images For many women, retirement isn't the relaxing haven it's cracked up to be. Because women earn less over their lifetime than men, they tend to have less saved. Women also live longer than men, which means their savings needs to stretch longer. According to a 2012 Government Accountability Office report, 12 percent of women age 65 and older are living in poverty, compared with only 7 percent of men. For divorced and widowed women in the same age group, the poverty rate is higher, at 21 and 15 percent, respectively. Even women with incomes over the poverty level often face financial stress. Nursing homes, which women have a greater chance of entering because they generally live longer, cost an average of $71,000 a year, and assisted-living facilities can cost $32,000 annually. What can women do to protect their finances? A lot, it turns out. Here are six strategies: Save more. The Women's Institute for a Secure Retirement recommends that women develop three sources of money: Social Security, a pension or retirement savings plan like a 401(k) and individual savings. Partly because women frequently take time out of the workforce to care for children or parents, their Social Security benefits and retirement savings tend to be less than men's, making it more important to store up additional dough. Start earlier. Manisha Thakor and Sharon Kedar, authors of "On My Own Two Feet: A Modern Girl's Guide to Personal Finance," recommend that women dedicate 10 percent of their income to retirement savings, starting in their 20s. Saving 10 percent of a $50,000 salary beginning at age 25, for example, would result in $2.2 million at retirement. (That calculation assumes that investments grow at 10 percent a year, gains are reinvested and annual salary increases offset inflation.) Maintain management skills. Traditionally in a marriage, finances are turned over to one person to manage. But women who want to keep their investing and budgeting skills sharp for life should keep a hand in their finances. Since women live to be 80 on average, versus 75 for men, even those in solid marriages are likely to have to manage their own money one day. According to the Women's Institute for a Secure Retirement, only one-third of women between ages 75 and 84 are married. Over age 85, the number drops to 13 percent. Consider a spousal IRA. Nonworking spouses, like those who take time out of the workforce to care for children, can still contribute up to $4,000 a year to a retirement account. (In 2013, the maximum contribution is $5,500.) While in most cases wives are entitled to at least part of their husband's retirement savings, in the case of death or divorce, pensions often decrease when the working partner dies. Overestimate money needs. Because people are living longer and inflation erodes the value of money, many underestimate their savings needs. The Women's Institute for a Secure Retirement says that women, given their longevity and lower savings, may want to consider replacing 100 percent of their income during retirement to keep up their lifestyle. Manage your own money. A 2008 study from the Hartford Financial Services Group and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology AgeLab found that couples who divide financial tasks, where one spouse handles day-to-day bill paying and the other investment management, fare better than those who hand over the financial reins to one person while the other takes a backseat. The couples with the divide-and-conquer approach were more likely to have more savings and develop a financial plan for the surviving spouse. Yet only 11 percent of respondents practiced this kind of shared division of labor. The study also showed that in couples where one spouse (usually the husband) took charge of all financial matters, the other spouse (usually the wife) often faced financial struggles later in life. The problem with that approach -- practiced by one-third of the couples -- is that when husbands die, women often find themselves with less money than expected, and they don't know how to manage it. On average, Hartford reports, women experience a 50 percent decrease in income upon becoming widowed and only a 20 percent decrease in expenses. Although women 65 and older are three times as likely as men to survive their spouse, many men face the same financial challenges. That's why it's important for women -- and men -- to stay involved in managing their finances. Hartford suggests that every couple should be able to answer these three questions well before retirement: If my spouse were to die, how would that affect the household income? What would an expensive illness do to our retirement savings? If either spouse were to die, would the survivor be prepared to take over management of the finances? Each spouse should also know how much the couple spends each month, the location of savings and investments, and how to access the funds. Couples can also involve a trustworthy financial adviser, especially if one spouse is not comfortable with investment decisions.

Best Internet Companies To Watch For 2014

Even if a company's losing a tremendous amount of market share in the US, it's imperative to also consider the company's global presence as well, writes MoneyShow's Jim Jubak, also of Jubak's Picks.

What's Yahoo (YHOO) worth?

Depends on whether you're looking at the company as a potential turnaround that's losing market share to aggressive competitors, or whether you see it as a way to get in on the growth of one of China's biggest e-commerce companies.

From the first perspective, Yahoo is an over-valued company, in my opinion, at a market cap of $33.8 billion.

From the second point of view, Yahoo is an under-valued company, in my opinion, at a market cap of $33.8 billion.

In reality, of course, Yahoo is a mix of these companies. And frankly, that mix is, at current prices, reasonably attractive—if you share my view of what is going on in the fiercely competitive Chinese Internet market.

Yahoo's third quarter results, released Tuesday, October 15, were ugly. Revenue fell 0.7%, was down 5% year over year. (That was in line with analyst estimates.) Operating income fell to $93 million from $152 million.

David Paul Morris/Bloomberg via Getty ImagesYahoo CEO Marissa Mayer NEW YORK and SAN FRANCISCO -- Three weeks ago, Yahoo chief executive Marissa Mayer strode into a Manhattan hotel and was greeted like a rock star by hundreds of advertising executives who snapped pictures as she sat down for an interview with journalist Charlie Rose. That same audience a year ago would have been grousing that Mayer hadn't done enough to engage Madison Avenue, which is arguably Yahoo's most important constituent since the Internet company derives more than 75 percent of its revenue from ad sales. "I think that Marissa has gotten a bit of a bad rap," said David Cohen, the chief media officer at UM, the global media arm of Interpublic Group. The industry perceived Mayer as not caring about advertising, choosing instead to focus solely on products, Cohen said. Ad agency executives say that over the past six months Mayer and her team have been working hard to change that perception, courting advertisers at key industry events, hosting lunches and attending meetings with agency representatives that include Yahoo executives like Chief Operating Officer Henrique de Castro, Senior Vice President and head of Americas Ned Brody and Chief Marketing Officer Kathy Savitt. The charm offensive has impressed many on Madison Avenue, but getting advertisers to actually spend more on Yahoo's Web properties won't happen overnight, industry experts said. The shift to advertising exchanges, which allow marketers to instantly buy placement for their ads across a broad constellation of websites, has pushed down the prices that online publishers such as Yahoo can charge. That was painfully apparent in the second quarter of this year, when Yahoo's display advertising revenue slid 11 percent due in part to a double-digit decline in ad prices. "Advertisers will become more excited if there's clear evidence that Yahoo is growing again in terms of its users and its engagement," said Mark Mahaney, an

Best Internet Companies To Watch For 2014: CYNK Technology Corp (CYNK)

Cynk Technology Corp., formerly Introbuzz, Inc., is a development stage-company. The Company intends to develop a social network business. Social networks are Web based services that allow individuals to post a profile and link their profile to other friends and organizations.

The Company intends to develop a database of professional and other business persons, as well as other interested persons in providing and utilizing contacts. As of November 14, 2012, the Company had not generated any revenue.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By WWW.DAILYFINANCE.COM]

CYNK Technology (CYNK), the mysterious over-the-counter stock that at one point broke a $6 billion market cap, dropped roughly 80 percent in its first trades after a Securities and Exchange Commission halt. The SEC halted CYNK for two weeks following a massive rise in the stock's value -- it had been worth only a few cents per share in June, but it jumped above $21 on July 10. The Belize-based CYNK Technology supposedly operates a social networking site, but filings indicate it only has one employee and virtually no assets. Experts told CNBC the week of the SEC halt that they expected CYNK to fall precipitously after reopening, and its first day of trading is proving those predictions correct. When it was halted, the stock was worth just less than $14 per share, and is now below $3 a share after briefly hovering around $5 earlier Friday morning. An OTC Markets spokeswoman told Reuters that CYNK's shares were not trading on its platform, but were occurring over the phone. Earlier this week Reuters reported that OTC's CEO did not expect CYNK to trade on its platform at all after reopening, as no brokerages would file the required paperwork for the stock to trade on their exchanges. An SEC spokesman said that the organization cannot comment on the status of a company after a suspension period ends, citing an online explanation of the process. That document notes that broker-dealers may not solicit investors to trade the previously suspended OTC stock until they satisfy several regulatory requirements. The SEC warned, however, that "unsolicited" trading may occur after a reopening -- as CYNK is now seeing -- but "even though such trading is allowed, it can be very risky for investors without current and reliable information about the company."

Best Internet Companies To Watch For 2014: Propell Technologies Group Inc (PROP)

Propell Technologies Group, Inc., incorporated on February 04, 2008, offers enhanced oil recovery technology and services. These services are offered through its wholly owned subsidiary Novas Energy USA, Inc., through commercial application of a Plasma-Pulse Technology.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By John Udovich]

Although oil prices ended the year at multi year lows, now would be the time to take a closer look atsmall cap gas compression or enhanced oil recovery (EOR) stocks likeUsa Compression Partners LP (NYSE: USAC), CSI Compressco LP (NASDAQ: CCLP) and Propell Technologies Group Inc (OTCBB: PROP) before oil and gas prices inevitably rise again. To begin with, natural gas compression services are used to transport natural gas and specifically to getnatural gas from low-pressure wells into gathering systems, storage and processing facilitiesas well as to maintain production as reservoir pressure declines. Compression servicesare also used to extract gas fromunconventional natural gas sources like shale plays. Meanwhile,so-called enhanced oil recovery or EOR is just a generic term for the techniques used for increasing the amount of crude oil that can be extracted from an oil field with potential methods including steam flood and water flood injectionor hydraulic fracturing(so-called fracking). Naturally, demand for compression services and EOR technologies would be impacted by oil and gas commodity prices.

Truth be told, oil giant Halliburton Company (NYSE:HAL) and major oil player Denbury Resources Inc. (NYSE:DNR) aren't likely worried about little ol' Propell Technologies Group Inc. Propell Technologies Group has developed a new piece of oil well technology that can rejuvenate a struggling oil flow that might just make names like Denbury Resources and Halliburton green with envy.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One health care player that insiders are active in here is Hansen Medical (HNSN), which develops, manufactures and markets new generation of medical robotics for accurate positioning, manipulation and stable control of catheters and catheter-based technologies. Insiders are buying this stock into relative weakness, since shares are off by 19.2% so far in 2013.

Hansen Medical has a market cap of $113 million and an ente! rprise value of $118 million. This stock trades at a premium valuation, with a price-to-sales of 7.13. Its estimated growth rate for this year is -3%, and for next year it's pegged at 36.2%. This is not a cash-rich company, since the total cash position on its balance sheet is $21.08 million and its total debt is $29.57 million.

A beneficial owner just bought 8.1 million shares, or about $9.96 million worth of stock, at $1.23 per share.

From a technical perspective, HNSN is currently trending above its 50-day and just below is 200-day moving average, which is neutral trendwise. This stock recently spiked up sharply from its low of $1.14 to its recent high of $1.96 a share with big upside volume. Since that move, shares of HNSN have pulled back and started to consolidation between $1.77 and $1.60 a share. This stock is now starting to bounce higher and move within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

If you're bullish on HNSN, then look for long-biased trades as long as this stock is trending some key near-term support levels at $1.60 to its 50-day at $1.51, and then once it breaks out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $1.77 to $1.96 a share high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average volume of 530,653 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then HNSN will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $2.15 to $2.23 a share. Any high-volume move above those levels will then gi

So what: Revenue was up 7.7%, to $283 million in the first quarter, and net income jumped 11.1%, to $17.4 million, or $0.18 per share. Analysts only expected $278 million in revenue, and earnings of $0.17 per share, and the slight beat was enough to send shares higher. Investors in Affymax (AFFY) would like you to believe that Omontys will make a miraculous comeback and that Affymax will be a major winner. My belief is that the last AFFY article contained multiple factual errors that when refuted show that the future for Omontys is in fact dire. At the conclusion of this article all doubt should be removed regarding the low likelihood that Omontys returns to market.

Amgen needed an Onyx-like acquisition badly. For one, sales of Aranesp and Epogen, its flagship drugs for anemia, are dropping on concerns of safety, and loss of monopoly in 2012 to Affymax (AFFY), which received FDA approval for a rival anemia drug. (Note though, that after Omontys was recalled this year, that problem is resolved for Amgen.) Secondly, four of its top selling products go off patent in 2015.

International ETFs May Be More Profitable

NEW YORK (ETF Expert) -- The S&P 500 has not experienced a 10% correction since Oct. 3, 2011. That's a heck of run without a reality check.

Yet, according to the researchers at Bespoke Investment Group, 515 trading sessions without a serious selloff is not unprecedented. The S&P 500 rocketed ahead throughout the 1990s (10/90-10/97) as well as in the 2000s (3/03-10/07) bull without a 10% price cut. The conclusion that many analysts are drawing from the data is that there is little reason to sweat the absence of a sanity-restoring setback.

Is there a problem with documenting occasions when markets pressed forward for multiple years without a hitch? Absolutely. For one thing, we're ignoring the number of occasions when markets did the opposite; that is, since 1928, the S&P 500 sold off by 10% in an overwhelming majority of years. Indeed, it is quite unusual for a 1990s- or 2000s-style campaign. Secondly, both of those campaigns ended with irrational exuberance giving way to -50% life-altering buzz cuts.

This is not to suggest that stocks will fail to grind higher in the intermediate term. They probably will. Ultra-slow employment gains coupled with U.S. political dysfunction ensure that the U.S. Federal Reserve will keep pumping greenbacks into the world's financial system. And let's face it, keeping yields low is the key to the revival of risk-on investing. That said, should investors embrace history when the data are technical (i.e., number of trading days without a 10% correction), but ignore history when the data are fundamental? For example, European stocks typically trade at similar price-to-earnings ratios as U.S. counterparts. Right now, though, SPDR Europe STOXX 50 (FEZ) is roughly 15% "cheaper" than SPDR S&P 500 (SPY); Vanguard All World (VEU) trades at an approximate 20% discount to SPY. There are other "fun facts" from the fundamental file as well. Between 1940 and 1995, the S&P 500's price-to-revenue ratio did not surpass 1.5. The P/S ratio for the S&P 500 today stands at 1.6. Worse yet, sales growth at U.S. corporations in the benchmark averaged a meager 3% in the previous four quarters. In the current environment where we have weak revenue growth -- in a historical framework where price-to-sales ratios are rarely this elevated -- perhaps it is more sensible to to consider international stock ETFs with lower P/S ratios.

Using a recent screen at Morningstar, here are 5 international ETFs with lower P/Es and lower P/S ratios than the S&P 500 SPDR Trust (SPY):

Value In Looking Abroad?
P/E P/S
SPDR S&P China (GXC) 10.4 1.1
First Trust Canada AlphaDEX (FCAN) 11.2 1.0
iShares Belgium (EWK) 11.7 0.8
Global X Norway 30 (NORW) 11.9 1.3
iShares Israel (EIS) 12.6 0.8

The world's second-largest economy may have a number of structural issues. Nevertheless, consumption by China's middle class is rising and the country's expansion remains on track. SPDR S&P China (GXC) is a reasonable way to tap into the growth.

Belgium may also be a bargain. The iShares Belgium Fund (EWK) bounced off its 200-day trendline in June and hasn't looked back since. Granted, EWK is likely to travel in the same general direction as other foreign stocks in the region. Still, the relative affordability combined with recent one-month and three-month momentum may make EWK particularly profitable. You can select a diversified approach to adding international exposure through funds such as VEU and/or iShares MSCI EAFE Small Cap (SCZ). Conversely, you can choose individual countries through single country funds like GXC and/or EWK. Regardless, you must be steadfast in your commitment to downside protection. Utilize a method for minimizing downside risk (e.g., stop-limit loss orders, hedges, trend analysis, etc.) and stick to it. The largest detractor for the quarter was CNH Industrial (CNHI), a global agricultural and construction equipment manufacturer, which fell 11%.  CNH released its nine-month results, which showed revenue growth of 0.6%, but the company's margins were adversely affected by Iveco, its trucks and commercial vehicles segment.  Iveco's margins fell short of expectations due to tough pricing, high launch costs, negative mix and increases in bad debt provisions.  Management maintains full-year guidance of 3-4% revenue growth.  We believe improvements in the Iveco division will help CNH Industrial achieve its long-term margin targets.

Best Dow Dividend Companies To Invest In 2014

Conventional agricultural products include foods, fibers, fuels and raw materials, but there is an additional, unconventional segment of the industry that I want to bring to your attention: wood.

Now, you may not think of wood as an agricultural product. But wood involves the growth and harvesting of organic material, so it fits the definition. An ETF that tracks the lumber industry is the appropriately named iShares S&P Global Timber & Forestry Index (WOOD).

Since its start in June 2008, this non-diversified fund has sought investment results that, before fees and expenses, correspond to the price and yield performance of an index which tracks the 25 largest publicly traded companies engaged in the ownership, management and supply chains of forests and timberlands.

Fair Value: In calculating fair value, I consider the NPV MMA Differential Fair Value along with these four calculations of fair value, see page 2 of the linked PDF for a detailed description:

    1. Avg. High Yield Price
    2. 20-Year DCF Price
    3. Avg. P/E Price
    4. Graham Number

SYY is trading at a premium to all four valuations above. The stock is trading at a 37.5% premium to its calculated fair value of $26.26. SYY did not earn any Stars in this section.

Dividend Analytical Data: In this section there are three possible Stars and three key metrics, see page 2 of the linked PDF for a detailed description:

    1. Free Cash Flow Payout
    2. Debt To Total Capital
    3. Key Metrics
    4. Dividend Growth Rate
    5. Years of Div. Growth
    6. Rolling 4-yr Div. > 15%

SYY earned two Stars in this section for 2.) and 3.) above. The stock earned a Star as a result of its most recent Debt to Total Capital being less than 45%. SYY earned a Star for having an acceptable score in at least two of the four Key Metrics measured. The company has paid a cash dividend to shareholders every year since 1970 and has increased its dividend payments for 43 consecutive years.

Dividend Income vs. MMA: Why would you assume the equity risk and invest in a dividend stock if you could earn a better return in a much less risky money market account (MMA) or Treasury bond? This section compares the earning ability of this stock with a high yield MMA. Two items are considered in this section, see page 2 of the linked PDF for a detailed description:

    1. NPV MMA Diff.
    2. Years to > MMA

The NPV MMA Diff. of the $282 is below the $500 target I look for in a stock that has increased dividends as long as SYY has. If SYY grows its dividend at 3.6% per year, it will take 3 years to equal a MMA yielding an estimated 20-year average rate of 3.41%. SYY earned a check for the Key Metric 'Years to >MMA' since its 3 years is le

…we believe the conventional grocers in our universe namely, Safeway, Supervalu, and SpartanNash (SPTN)re most at risk from Amazon.com’s expansion. Kroger should fare better due to its very strong price positioning and weighted-average market share positions. In addition, we believe that Kroger may actually end up as a net beneficiary of Amazon.com’s expansion, as grocers with lower market share positions (outside the top 5) are likely to exit/close, leaving more share to top players such as Kroger. The natural/organic specialty players are also better positioned to absorb Amazon.com’s expansion, with Whole Food Markets least at-risk due to its product mix (e.g. prepared foods), differentiated format, strong EBIT margins, and very strong balance sheet.

Margins matter. The more Spartan Stores (Nasdaq: SPTN  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Spartan Stores's competitive position could be.

Best Dow Dividend Companies To Invest In 2014: Foundation Medicine Inc (FMI)

Foundation Medicine, Inc., incorporated on November 12, 2009, is a commercial-stage company. The Company is focused on fundamentally changing the way patients with cancer are treated. The Company platform includes methods and algorithms for analyzing tumor tissue samples across all types of cancer, as well as information aggregation and concise reporting capabilities. Its products provide genomic information about each patient individual cancer, enabling physicians to optimize treatments in clinical practice and enabling biopharmaceutical companies to develop targeted oncology therapies more effectively.

FoundationOne, its first clinical product, is, to its knowledge, the only commercially available comprehensive molecular information product designed for use in the routine care of patients with cancer. In addition, the Company is considered a non-contracting provider by commercial third-party payors because it has not entered into specific contracts to provide FoundationOne to their covered patients, and as a result it takes on primary responsibility for obtaining reimbursement on behalf of patients.

Advisors' Opinion:

It wouldn't be fair to say there's nothing like it "out there", because there is. A company called Foundation Medicine Inc. (NASDAQ:FMI) has developed a similar/comparable app. The CLRX version of the solution appears superior in most ways, however, if for no other reason than because of the projected revenue growth the company is apt to see.
