5 Best Bank Stocks To Own For 2014

JP Morgan Chase (JPM) has reportedly resumed talks with the U.S. as the bank is on the verge of a lawsuit concerning its representation of mortgage-backed securities it sold from 2005 through 2007.

The subprime mortgage crisis has been a hot topic since the Great Recession. JP Morgan, among other financial institutions, is in focus as the U.S. notified that institution that it is ready to file a formalized complaint. It seems unlikely that the case will ever go to court as it appears JP Morgan is quite eager to settle the matter and shoulder a hefty fine.

The hits just keep coming for JP Morgan as it is still dealing with the trading loss brought on by the “London Whale” as well as a lawsuit two years ago that stemmed from its acquisition of Bear Stearns.

Shares of World Acceptance Corporation (WRLD) have plunged today after the company disclosed in an 8K that theConsumer Financial Protection Bureau has requested information about its sales practices.

Getty Images Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Director Richard Cordray

Shares of World Acceptance Corporation have plunged 19% to $79.19 at 3:43 p.m.–and dragged down anything remotely connected to payday lending. Cash America International (CSH) has dropped 7.8% to $39.35, pawn-shop operator EZCorp (EZPW) has fallen 3.7% to $12.33, and wire-transfer companies Western Union (WU) and MoneyGram International (MGI) have fallen 2.6% and 5.8%, respectively.

Sterne Agee’s Henry Coffey and team explain what’s happening with World Acceptance and why they continue to rate it Neutral:

    1. Because of the company’s size (largest or second largest small loan company in the country), it was inevitable that the CFPB would be looking into [World Acceptance]. The question never was “if” in our minds but “when.”

    2. The inquiry does not in itself mean there are issues that have been discovered by the CFPB…

    4. With approximately 30% of the company’s loans underwritten with some form of credit insurance, it would be difficult for[World Acceptance] to continue to make these loans without this product…

    6. The company indicated in its 8K that it believes it is in compliance with the law.

Shares of World Acceptance Corporation has dropped 9.2% so far this year, while Cash America International has gained 2.7%, EZCorp has risen 5.5%, Western Union has fallen 6.6% and MoneyGram International has declined 15% in 2014.

One credit services player that insiders are jumping into big here is World Acceptance (WRLD), which is engaged in small-loan consumer finance business in the U.S. and Mexico. Insiders are buying this stock into notable weakness, since shares have dropped lower by 14.8% so far in 2014.

World Acceptance has a market cap of $734 million and an enterprise value of $1.2 billion. This stock trades at a cheap valuation, with a trailing price-to-earnings of 7.5 and a forward price-to-earnings of 6.4. Its estimated growth rate for this year is 16.1%, and for next year it's pegged at 9.5%. This is not a cash-rich company, since the total cash position on its balance sheet is $14.63 million and its total debt is $559.70 million.

A director just bought 129,580 shares, or about $9.27 million worth of stock, at $71.44 to $72.08 per share.

From a technical perspective, WRLD is currently trending above its 50-day moving average and below its 200-day moving average, which is neutral trendwise. This stock has been uptrending strong over the last few weeks, with shares moving higher from its low of $63.25 to its recent high of $75.20 a share. During that uptrend, shares of WRLD have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of WRLD within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

If you're bullish on WRLD, then I would look for long-biased trades as long as this stock is trending above its 50-day moving average of $70.85 a share and then once it breaks out above some near-term overhead resistance at $75.20 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that registers near or above its three-month average volume of 169,386 shares. If that breakout materializes soon, then WRLD will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at its 200-day moving average of $79.54 to $84 a share.

Yesterday, small cap geothermal stock U.S. Geothermal Inc (NYSEMKT: HTM) produced a geyser of a return when it surged 26.79%, meaning its worth taking a closer look at the stock verses the performance of other geothermal stocks like small cap Ormat Technologies, Inc (NYSE: ORA) and mid cap Calpine Corporation (NYSE: CPN).First of all, I should mention there are some other geothermal stocks out there like Alterra Power Corp (CVE: AXY) and Ram Power Corp (TSE: RPG) who have their primary listing on Canadian exchanges with secondary ones on the OTCmeaning they may not be a good deal for American investors or easy to invest in. Second, U.S. Geothermal Inc itself is a good geothermal proxy as itsfocused on developing, owning, and operating clean, sustainable electric power from geothermal energy resources and itsoperating geothermal power projects at Neal Hot Springs, Oregon; San Emidio, Nevada; and Raft River, Idaho plus El Ceibillo, an advanced stage, geothermal prospect located within a 24,710 acre energy rights concession area near Guatemala City, the largest city in Central America.

Alamy Fried chicken and waffles is a staple menu item at countless soul food and comfort food restaurants, but that's not stopping Burger King (BKW) from trying to give the meal a fast-food spin. Burger King is testing a new sandwich in the Northeast that takes the breaded chicken patty used in its Classic Crispy Chicken Sandwich from its King Deals Value Menu and replaces the bun with a split waffle. Burger King's Chicken & Waffle Sandwich isn't as hearty as the meal that it's based on. It's selling for as little as $2.29. But the chain's latest attempt to turn heads with a unique menu item will at least attract curious nibblers if it does decide to broaden the offering across the country. Waffling About Burger King isn't the first popular chain to attempt to reinvent this classic dish. As Nation's Restaurant News points out, last summer, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen (PLKI) offered Chicken Waffle Tenders -- consisting of chicken tenders dipped in a vanilla maple-scented waffle batter, served with a honey maple dipping sauce. DineEquity's (DIN) IHOP did it three years ago by combining its chicken strips with Belgian waffle quarters. Yum! Brands (YUM) tried to breathe new life into its breakfast business last summer by testing a Waffle Taco -- an egg, sausage, and waffle breakfast sandwich. Even if it doesn't succeed -- and some of the early taste tests haven't been very flattering to the chain's new sandwich -- it's at least comforting to see that Burger King isn't just copying McDonald's (MCD) the way that it has for the past couple of years. Burger King followed McDonald's in offering fancy coffee drinks, fresh fruit smoothies, and popcorn chicken. It has gone on to roll out doppelgangers of the Egg McMuffin and McRib sandwiches. In November, it introduced the Big King, which any patron will quickly recognize as a body double to the Big Mac. Then again, it's not as if following McDonald's lead is such a clever idea right now. As the fast-food wars heat up, restaurants are getting more creative with their menu items. One item that is getting a lot of attention is the waffle. Two restaurant chains that have introduced their own variations of the waffle are Taco Bell, owned by Yum! Brands (NYSE: YUM  ) and Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen (NASDAQ: PLKI  ) . Taco Bell has made the Waffle Taco a centerpiece of its new breakfast menu. Meanwhile, Popeyes is bringing back its popular Chicken Waffle Tenders. Could the waffle be the answer and boost same-store sales for these restaurants? If it is the answer, expect to see more variations of the waffle on many more menu boards.

Alamy Companies can make brilliant moves, but there are also times when things don't work out quite as planned. From an automaker committing to add thousands of high-paying jobs in the new year to a home craft icon's payroll going the other way, here's a rundown of the week's most interesting moves in the business world. Sysco (SYY) -- Winner Leave it to a food company to eat the competition. Sysco is the country's largest food service company, providing restaurants, schools, and other institutions with their edibles. It's about to get bigger. Sysco kicked off the week by announcing a deal valued at $3.5 billion in cash and stock for its nearest competitor, US Foods. There isn't likely to be a lot of regulatory hassle over the combination. This is a highly fragmented sector, with Sysco commanding just 18 percent of the overall market. It will be 27 percent after completing the deal. Given the nature of the business, there are advantages of being big, and Sysco is about to get substantially bigger at a reasonable price relative to its own valuation. lululemon athletica (LULU) -- Loser Shares of Lululemon stumbled 12 percent on Thursday after the retailer of high-end yoga apparel offered up a gloomy outlook for the holiday quarter. The Canadian chain spooked investors by forecasting flat comparable-store sales for the period. Its profit guidance also fell short of expectations. AP/Jae C. Hong For all the talk about drones replacing parcel carriers or self-driving cars disrupting the taxi industry, there's a bigger tech revolution happening in the restaurant industry right now that may displace workers far sooner than anything futurists foresee in those other industries. The arrival of tablets and smartphone apps that detail menu items, take orders, and let you settle up your tab at the en of the meal will be a big theme among casual dining chains and even a few independent foodie haunts this year. Brinker International's (EAT) Chili's, DineEquity's (DIN) Applebee's, and a handful of San Francisco fine dining establishments are leading the push to add the technology, which will make waiters and waitresses less necessary. None of the chains have said that these tech initiatives will lead them to reduce waitstaff headcount -- but it doesn't take a lot of foresight to connect the dots. If folks are using table-side tablets to place orders and ask for drink refills, or firing up a smartphone app to pay at the end of a meal, that naturally translates into fewer front-of-house employees needed to keep an eatery going. Order Up In fact, some industry leaders outright deny that mobile tech will displace staff. "This really isn't a labor play," DineEquity CEO Julia Stewart said on CNBC late last year, explaining Applebee's move to deploy 100,000 tablets this year -- one at every table. "It's not about saving labor. This is really about creating an opportunity to talk to our guest, have an interactive conversation with our guest, and give our guest a lot more opportunities." At first, a waitstaff will be instrumental in assisting customers as they use the tablets to place orders or pay their bills. There will also be patrons who are apprehensive about embracing the technology, and Applebee's will still have waiters taking orders the old-fashioned way for people who prefer talking to a person. Chili's is going with a less-comprehensive table

Hot Performing Companies To Watch In Right Now

Last month in Play Ball: More IPOs on Deck, I mentioned that the next master limited partnership to IPO could be Enable Midstream Partners (NYSE: ENBL). Enable Midstream was formed in May 2013 as a joint venture by affiliates of CenterPoint Energy (NYSE: CNP), OGE Energy (NYSE: OGE) and ArcLight Capital Partners.

The partnership had filed its S-1 with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) back in November, and just missed its targeted IPO date in the first quarter of 2014. The $500 million IPO was priced at a midpoint of $20 per unit on April 11, giving the partnership an initial market capitalization of $8.32 billion — the richest for an MLP IPO on record. Units actually opened at $21.50, and have since risen to $24.58.

Performance so far has been consistent with the advances enjoyed by most of the MLP IPOs over the past year. In fact a few of them made major advances. As discussed in last week article No Letup for Last Year Top IPO, the best performing MLP of the year so far is Phillips 66 Partners (NYSE: PSXP), which came public last summer and is up 48 percent year-to-date. Of course, there are some exceptions. Marlin Midstream Partners (Nasdaq: FISH) conducted its IPO three days after Phillips 66 Partners last year, and it has traded below its IPO price since.

For a bit of perspective, that multiple is about double that of top Bakken operator Continental Resources (NYSE: CLR  ) . It's also almost four times the multiple of closer rival Whiting Petroleum (NYSE: WLL  ) . That's why some of Kodiak's potential suitors viewed it as already fully valued.

According to Morgan Stanley, the server business generated about $4.9 billion of the company's $15.4 billion in server sales last year. This enormous volume is due to the fact that IBM may be producing the overall market's highest volumes, at the lowest profit level; which suggests this segment is doomed. Computer Peripherals: The industry gained 1.72% by 10:45 am. The top performer in this industry was Synaptics (NASDAQ: SYNA), which gained 3.7%. Synaptics' PEG ratio is 0.81.

    You got me there
In these specific use cases, Apple simply can't compete. Short of calling up Synaptics (NASDAQ: SYNA  ) and incorporating the company's ClearPad technology and its 3D-Touch capabilities, the iPhone will never know when you're about to touch it. Apple used to tap Synaptics for iPod click-wheel sensors, but that was a long time ago. The Samsung design win has given Synaptics a nice pop, since the GS4 is bound to bring in abundant unit volumes.

However, I expect that Intel is at risk of having a significant marketing problem trying to sell a dual core product into a world of quad core phones, even if the dual core part delivers better performance/watt. I further expect that from what is currently known about Bay Trail's GPU (4 EU Gen7 GPU), it is unlikely that -- unless Intel is either using Imagination's (IGNMF.PK) next generation PowerVR 6 or a beefed up Gen7 design for the "Merrifield" SoC -- it will be as competitive with the Snapdragon 800 on the GPU side of things, which could pose as an additional headwind to adoption. I also believe that the Q1 2014 launch curtails any hope that there will be a 14nm smartphone product launched in 2014 (although Mr. Krzanich's comments about "acceleration" could be a source of optimism here), which means that the company's process lead could ultimately prove to be ephemeral in this particular end market. Fortunately, product cycles in this space are short, so it may be okay to have Merrifield be reasonably short lived.

What little the world knows about Apple's concrete plans comes mostly from Apple and its hardware partners. Apple released schematics for what third-party iOS controllers should look like (which also revealed that OS X might get in on the fun). Companies such as Logitech (LOGI), ClamCase and Moga followed suit, and they have been teasing their upcoming products since September. And updates to a handful of existing iOS games have included bits about supporting "Made for iPhone" controllers in their release logs.

To say the past twelve months have been tough ones for Logitech International SA (NASDAQ:LOGI) might be an understatement. Shares have fallen from a high of $10.29 last September to a low of $6.24 in April of this year. Though LOGI hasn't traded lower than that since then, it's not like the stock's suggested it wants to stage a major recovery... unless maybe you look really, really close. Well, I did.

Advisors' Opinion:

Take George Risk (RSKIA). All of their competitors moved overseas. Theye still in Nebraska. Management doesn really claim they can either be better or cheaper than their competitors. They know they can be cheaper. And as far as better this isn dark chocolate theye selling. Beyond customization, timeliness, and reliability I not sure the idea of ualityhas much meaning in that business. It either frustration-free or it not. The two things George Risk can be are timely and customized. Both of those things are easier to be for American customers if you are manufacturing in the U.S.

  • [By Geoff Gannon] n. When it traded around $4.50 (it now more like $7.50 a share) it was a net-net with a good business and a moat. There were risks customer concentration for one and it was no blue chip. There was no diversification of product lines, customers, geography, industry, etc. It was closely tied to U.S. construction activity.

All this means it was no blue chip. Not that it didn have a moat. I felt it did. And certainly not that it wasn a high quality business. It demonstrably was (unleveraged returns on tangible equity were around 30%). And it was a net-net. In fact, it was a net cash stock at one time.

So they do happen. But they are rare. The usual distinction with net-nets is not between companies like that companies which may have a moat, do earn good returns on capital, etc. but between companies that are legitimate and illegitimate businesses.

A legitimate business is in my mind a historically profitable one. It is likely to have positive retained earnings (there are exceptions to this rule but it a good first check). It should have more years of profits (6 or more) than losses in the last 10 years. And it should be self-financing.

Compare this to an illegitimate business. The least legitimate businesses are those that while publicly traded have never turned a profit and can self finance. They may be net-nets but they are net-nets because they have issued stock in the past and then seen their share prices drop. Retained earnings are often negative.

There are other factors to consider. Is the business old or young? Is depreciation and other accounting especially conservative or aggressive? Are taxes especially conservative or aggressive? And is share issuance dilutive or not.

I think a legitimate business tends towards LIFO accounting, quicker depreciation, higher taxes paid as a percentage of reported income, and lower share issuance. There are exceptions. Many
