A strong 2014 will take the S&P over 2,000

Leave it to our elected officials, the esteemed Gentleman from Ohio and the Lady from California, not to mention the other 533 reps who are supposed to be in charge of running the country and representing our interests, to reverse a strong market rally and risk shutting down our government days after the Federal Reserve announced it would not taper its asset purchases due to economic uncertainty.

The good news is that market participants appear to be turning a deaf ear to the moronic rhetoric and absolute lack of leadership coming from the Senate and House of Representatives. After the Federal Reserve surprised markets by announcing it would not change monetary policy, and a reasonably successful election cycle by Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Party (CDU), markets will likely rally in the fourth quarter. My call is for the S&P 500 to close above 1,750 on Dec. 31, and to cross 2,000 in 2014.

While a 3% to 5% correction over the next couple of weeks is increasingly likely, the stage is set for the current bull market to run on. I don't expect the Fed to taper this year, and even if it does, it will be with the wind to their backs in the form of a much stronger economy. Just as importantly, valuations and the overall environment are conducive for new highs to be set.

• Market appreciation is driven by corporate earnings. S&P earnings for 2013 will likely come in around $112 to $114, meaning that a 1,750 S&P would have a market multiple of just over 15 times. Not cheap, but certainly not expensive.

• Interest rates will likely rise enough to cause losses in bond portfolios, but not enough to make money market and fixed-annuity investments attractive. This will likely drive investors to high-quality, high-dividend-paying stocks.

• Gold, silver and other commodities will likely be underperformers as well, causing investors to shift their attention away from these investments and back to stocks — after all, we've all been conditioned to chase returns.

• While central banks may tighten monetary policy slightly, they will remain extremely supportive. Fed tapering from $85 billion per month to $60 billion is hardly constrictive.

• The global economic recovery will continue at its current modest pace — without meaningful inflationary pressures, wage pressures or disruptions to the business cycle.

Although there are no guarantees and vigilance is always appropriate, the stage appears set for another great year for stocks. Much like this time last year, when few investors believed that stocks could or would rise another 10% (the S&P was below 1,400 this time last year), positive surprises are more likely than a prolonged correction.

European large-cap pharmaceuticals like Novartis (NVS)  and Bristol Meyers Squibb (BMY)  count amongst some of our favorite stocks right now, as do U.S. multinationals that are growing revenue and margins in Asia — Tupperware (TUP)  is a shining example. Stay away from utilities and energy stocks, as they are likely to be the laggards over the next year.

CenturyLink (CTL) has been a great stock to hold for investors in 2014. The stock has appreciated more than 22% YTD and the company is taking many steps to move forward. So the question is, will CenturyLink continue to reward investors or should investors take profits! off the table? Let's take a look.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Shares of CenturyLink (CTL) have dropped more than 2% today on reports that it’s trying to buy cloud-computing company Rackspace Hosting (RAX).

    ZUMAPRESS.com

Bloomberg has the details on the potential transaction:

CenturyLink has discussed the idea with San Antonio-based Rackspace, which last month said it is still conducting an internal review of its strategic options, according to the people, who asked not to be identified talking about private information. One person said a deal may not be reached for the company, which had a stock-market valuation of $5.33 billion at the end of last week.

Citigroup’s Michael Rollins thinks a deal will depend on valuation:

Valuation matters. We believe CenturyLink can financially digest a possible acquisition of Rackspace under $50 per share based on our scenario analysis. We believe CenturyLink could pay for Rackspace using up to 50% in cash to keep net debt financial leverage near or below 3x on our pro forma analysis. While PF FV/OIBDA may not move substantially paying up to $50/share, we estimate FCF/share and norm. EPS could be diluted by up to (11%) in the first year. Based on our initial analysis, we would take a neutral view for a possible buyout under $40 per share, but believe CenturyLink shares could trade lower if it were to pay more than $50 for Rackspace. We remain Neutral on CenturyLink largely based on valuation.

Shares of CenturyLink have dropped 2.2% to $40.55 at 1:18 p.m., while Rackspace has gained 5% to $39.10.

It's a grim trend that would make this a scary area for shareholders, but good luck trying to tell income-chasing investors to stay away. Despite their dubious growth prospects, Fron! tier Comm! unications (FTR), CenturyLink (CTL) and Windstream (WIN) have been attracting investors based of the strength of their generous quarterly distributions. Frontier and Windstream -- and to a lesser extent CenturyLink -- have tried to go where the big boys won't. They concentrate on smaller markets where traditional phone services are still in demand, and they don't have to compete as hard with the titans of telco. It's an interesting strategy. It has long-term flaws, but the three stocks are still magnetic to investors that put up with the shortcomings in exchange for fat dividend checks every three months. Yield Signs How meaty are the disbursements here? CenturyLink yields 5.9 percent, and it's at the low end of the niche. Windstream is the most generous payer with a hefty 9.9 percent payout. Frontier straddles the two with its 7 percent yield. All three reported quarterly results this week, giving the market some valuable insight on the sustainability of their popular distributions. It's important to remember that these three companies aren't merely selling landlines. You don't stick around if you're only selling buggy whips, Beanie Babies and Milli Vanillii CDs. Frontier, CenturyLink and Windstream are trying to offset the folks canceling their home phone lines and millennials who have no intention of ever having them by selling more relevant broadband connectivity. They also offer businesses a growing array of corporate communication services. For the most part, these efforts haven't been enough to grow the overall business. Frontier kicked off the three days of earnings reports on Tuesday, che

Top 5 Airline Companies To Watch In Right Now

It's been a topsy-turvy week for the markets, but stocks are back on the rise today. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) has gained 137 points, or 0.91%, as of 2:20 p.m. EDT, with all but a few of its 30 component stocks in the green.

Labor market gains have boosted Wall Street today. U.S. payroll growth increased over the past year's average, adding 175,000 jobs in May. However, sequestration's impact forced the federal government to cut 14,000 workers in the month, and more jobs could be lost in the future as further cuts come down the line. That's not hurting stocks today, however. Let's check out which stocks are lighting up your end to the week.

Boeing flies high
Boeing (NYSE: BA  ) ranks among today's top Dow stocks, gaining 2% in its latest 2013 surge. The aerospace giant has cleared the turbulence of its 787 aircraft's grounding. Singapore Airlines made a Dreamliner purchase last month after the aircraft's battery problems were resolved. Competitor Airbus is still right on Boeing's heels, however: The European rival is looking to use its planned A350 aircraft to fight Boeing's control of the long-haul airline market. Still, with the 787 now free to fly and start clearing its huge order backlog, Boeing's stock looks ready to keep soaring throughout the year.

Best Computer Hardware Companies To Watch For 2016: Alaska Air Group Inc. (ALK)

Alaska Air Group, Inc., through its subsidiaries, Alaska Airlines, Inc. and Horizon Air Industries, Inc., operates as an airline company serving destinations in the western United States, Canada, and Mexico. The company provides passenger air services; and freight and mail services primarily to and within the state of Alaska and on the West Coast. As of December 31, 2009, it operated a fleet of 110 jet aircraft; and Horizon Air Industries operated a fleet of 18 jets and 40 turboprop aircraft. The company was founded in 1932 and is based in Seattle, Washington.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Maria Armental and Anna Prior]

Alaska Air Group Inc.(ALK) said it is planning a 2-for-1 stock split next month. Shares have tripled since the company’s prior split two years ago amid broad sharp gains for airline stocks on signs of consistent profitability.

  • [By Dimitra DeFotis]

“… taken off over the past year as the industry’s ‘rationalization’ has meant higher fares, reduced capacity, and fewer amenities for passengers. Some measure of competition still comes from discounters such as Southwest (LUV), JetBlue (JBLU), and Spirit (SAVE). What’s left of antitrust enforcement ought to prevent these cut-rate carriers being scooped up by the big three of the skies, although Jack Hough noted … that Alaska Air (ALK) could draw takeover interest over the long haul (“Merger Mania May Soon Be on the Way,” Nov. 21) (subscription required).

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Shares of Alaska Air (ALK) are falling today after it was cut by the folks at Raymond James, while Delta Air Lines (DAL) is gaining after getting hit hard earlier this week.

    Associated Press

Raymond James analysts Savanthi Syth and James Parker explain why they downgraded Alaska Air:

We are downgrading Alaska Air from Outperform to Market Perform due to the risk to our 2015 EPS estimate from intensifying competitive capacity pressure. While 1Q15 schedules are still very preliminary, it appears competitive seat capacity growth is set to accelerate to 12% y/y from the already elevated ~6% y/y level over the previous 6 quarters. We continue to believe that Alaska will use its dominant market position and strong balance sheet to successfully compete with Delta and support its stock. However, while the competitive issues in Seattle are not new, we believe significant upside to the stock in the near term is unlikely given risks to 2015 earnings estimates.

Speaking of Delta, it plunged 5.2% on Wednesday after the airline said revenues would be lower than it thought. Wolfe Research’s Hunter Keay and Jared Shojaian look into Delta’s miss:

August was the third straight month of underwhelming PRASM results from Delta Air Lines. Perhaps not coincidentally Alaska Air and JetBlue (JBLU) have been underperforming industry PRASM lately as well, two airlines defending themselves against Delta Air Lines. To be sure, Delta Air Lines PRASM is still growing faster than its CASM, which means margins are expanding y/y, but the rate of margin change is likely to be less good relative to United Continental (UAL) and American Airlines (AAL) due to Delta Air Lines’ capacity choices. We like Delta Air Lines, just not as much as most other Outperform-rated airlines.

Shares of Alaska Air have dropped 1.1% to $47.13 at 1:53 p.m., while Delta Air Lines has gained 0.5% to $39.47, JetBlue has risen 0.4% to $12.57, United Continent

WhenUnited Continental(UAL) pledged to cut costs on its investors day, it got a big boost that helped it outpace competitors like Delta Air Lines (DAL), US Airways (LCC) and Alaska Airlines (ALK). Can the good times continue?

One airline player that's starting to trend within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade is Gol Linhas Aereas Inteligentes (GOL), through its subsidiaries, engages in the air transportation of passengers, cargo, and mailbags in Latin America. This stock has been hammered by the bears so far in 2013, with shares off by 42%.

If you look at the chart for Gol Linhas Aereas Inteligentes, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending strong for the last two months, with shares moving higher from its low of $2.74 to its recent high of $3.83 a share. During that uptrend, shares of GOL have been mostly making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. Shares of GOL just recently formed a double bottom above its 50-day moving average at $3.57 to $3.55 a share. Shares of GOL are now starting to spike higher above those support levels and move within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in GOL if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $3.83 to $4.14 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 2.19 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then GOL will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance level at its 200-day moving average of $5.30 a share to $6 a share.

Traders can look to buy GOL off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day moving average of $3.46 a share. One can also buy GOL off strength once it takes out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

  • [By Jim Jubak]

One place to look for it this week has been in the ADRs, the New York traded ADRs, American Depository Receipts of GOL. One of the two big Brazilian airlines is the only one that is not owned by somebody else. The symbol is (GOL). It went up like 9.5% on October 21; it went up about 4.5% on October 22, pulled back a tiny little bit on October 23, but still a major, major move. This is basically on the effect of a weaker dollar versus the Brazilian real, since GOL is basically a domestic airline and almost all their revenue is denominated in real, which means that when the real gets cheap against the dollar, it hurts their revenue, especially because most of their costs, a lot of their costs, probably about 80% of their costs are denominated in dollars. A strong dollar means what they pay for oil, kerosene, jet fuel, what they pay for debt service, what they pay on airplane leases, all denominated in dollars, goes up, so GOL has been getting hammered on this. The reversal of this is a big deal for the stock.

Multifamily real estate investment trustColonial Properties Trust (NYSE: CLP  ) announced yesterday its third-quarter dividend of $0.21 per share, the same rate it's paid for the past two quarters after raising the payout 17% from $0.18 per share.

Apartment-only real estate investment trustMid-America Apartment Communities (NYSE: MAA  ) once again is snapping up properties, this time announcing Monday that it is addingmultifamily housing operator Colonial Properties Trust (NYSE: CLP  ) to its portfolio in an $8.6 billion transaction.

  • [By Sean Williams]

Another growth driver looks to be its pending $8.6 billion merger with Colonial Properties Trust (NYSE: CLP  ) . The combined entity would become the second-largest U.S. based residential REIT, with 85,000 apartment units. Opposition to the deal from some of Colonial's shareholders does exist, but comparatively speaking, MAA is in great shape either way. It already has a high occupancy rate, and the addition of Colonial's properties would only further serve to enhance its rental pricing power.

After meeting with Eaton’s management team, analyst Christopher Glynn reported some encouraging prospects for the company. Glynn noted that, “Near-term capital allocation priorities remain reducing debt incurred from the Cooperdeal, with no significant acquisitions expected until integration is complete (~2 years remaining).
