Zeeland, Mich.-based Herman Miller (NASDAQ: MLHR  ) is buying New York's Maharam Fabric Corporation in an all-cash deal valued at $156 million.

Herman Miller, a maker of office furniture, announced the purchase of the textile manufacturer Wednesday, and said the deal is expected to close April 29. Herman Miller CEO Brian Walker called the purchase "a natural and complementary union" and one that combines the firms' respective "operational strengths and resources [to] provide immediate, mutual strategic leverage."

Nonetheless, Herman Miller assured investors that it expects the deal to be immediately accretive to earnings.

At the time, NDS Group was 80% owned by News Corp (NWSA) and they were providing the smart cards for all Direct TV (DTV) receivers. Further, they were one of only three smart card providers and one of their competitors, Canal Plus a Vivendi subsidiary, was struggling with maintaining the security of their smart card systems which they were providing to non-News Corp television companies throughout Europe. It seems that the access codes on their systems were turning up on the internet and bootleggers were stealing the signals. EcoStar, which would later be spun off by DISH, was making the same claims back in the 1990s. Both companies maintained that News Corp, acting through its subsidiary NDS Group, was the culprit. To make a long story short, Canal Plus filed a multi-billion dollar lawsuit against News Corp and later on EcoStar would follow suit.

The new News Corp. (NASDAQ: NWSA  ) has a lot to prove as a stand-alone company.

This News Corp. is the product of a split between the former media conglomerate also known as News Corp., which then consisted of one company containing ample entertainment, broadcasting, and print-media assets. When the old News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch chose to divide it into two separate companies, with trading commencing on July 1, the new News Corp. inherited the print-journalism assets, including The Wall Street Journal and theperennially money-bleedingNew York Post, as well as book publisher HarperCollins and Dow Jones (for which I worked, as a media columnist at MarketWatch, from 2007 till early this year).

Cable TV and Internet provider Time Warner Cable Inc (TWC) on Tuesday received some positive sentiment from an analyst at BITG Research.

The firm reiterated its “Buy” rating on TWC and lifted its price target from $80 to $160. Analyst Richard Greenfield feels the company shouldn’t be in a hurry to sell, given its internal performance is improving.

Greenfield commented, “While laying out all the potential acquisition scenarios spanning multiple companies and joint bids is far too complex, we believe the operational efficiencies and improved clustering of a TWC acquisition/breakup should warrant value of at least $160.” Both Charter Communications (CHTR) and Comcast (CMCA) are considered potential suitors for TWC, which is exploring a sale amid an expected upcoming era of consolidation for the cable television industry. Cable providers have been feeling the heat from Internet-based media services like Netflix, Hulu, and others, which offer consumers on-demand movies and TV shows for relatively low monthly fees.

Ringo Chiu/Zuma Press/Alamy There were plenty of winners and losers this week, including a fast-growing pastry shop that ran out of dough and had to shut its stores, and a maker of unmanned aircraft vehicles soaring after a blowout quarterly report. Here's a rundown of the week's best and worst. Nikola Tesla -- Winner Funding for a Nikola Tesla museum was announced on Thursday with Telsa Motors (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk is contributing $1 million to build the homage to Tesla on the grounds of the inventor's lab in Long Island. Brainy humorist Matthew "The Oatmeal" Inman has been championing a museum to honor the underrated visionary, taking to Twitter a few months ago to appeal for Musk's financial contribution. It worked. The museum's getting built. Musk gets one step closer to becoming Tony "Iron Man" Stark incarnate. And Tesla Motors does the right thing by honoring the man that gave it its name. The Container Store (TCS) -- Loser Remember when retailers dismissed concerns about sloppy holiday showings because of the snowstorms that blanketed a lot of the country in December and January? Remember how those same retailers then blamed the Easter holiday shift -- from March last year to April this year -- as a reason for the slow traffic the following quarter? Well, it seems that many chains are still stumbling, and they're running out of excuses. "We thought our sluggish sales were all because of weather and calendar shifts that began last November and continued into the spring, but now we've come to realize it's more than weather and calendar," The Container Store's CEO said on Tuesday. Kip Tindell blamed his storage and housewares store's weakness on a "retail funk" that's going around. Symptoms include "traffic declines" a "tepid retail environment" and "challenging sales." The Container Store warned that it will fall short of its earlier profit and sales targets for this fiscal year. Comparable store sales declined during the quarter ending in May, an
