Source: ThinkstockSolarCity Corp. (NASDAQ: SCTY) reported third quarter 2013 earnings after markets closed Wednesday. For the quarter, the solar PV installer posted an adjusted earnings per share (EPS) loss of $0.43 on revenues of $48.6 million. In the same period a year ago, the company reported an unadjusted EPS loss of $3.41 on revenues of $31.97 million. Third-quarter results compare to the Thomson Reuters consensus estimates for an adjusted EPS loss of $0.44 and $42.52 million in revenues.

On a GAAP basis SolarCity posted EPS of $0.04 which excludes a line item loss of $0.47 per share attributed to common stockholders.

The company�� outlook for the fourth quarter includes an adjusted EPS loss of $0.55 to $0.65. SolarCity expects to deploy 101 megawatts of new solar projects during the quarter, with a gross margin of 30% to 40%. Revenues from leasing are expected at $22 to $24 million and systems sales revenues are expected at $18 to $22 million. Operating expenses are pegged at $50 to $55 million.

    JinkoSolar (NYSE: JKS  ) suffered a widened quarterly loss, as revealed in the release of its fiscal Q4 and 2012 results. For the quarter, revenue for the China-based solar specialist was the equivalent of $187 million, down from $192 million in the same period the previous year. Net loss widened over that time span, to $122 million, or $1.38 per share, from Q4 2011's red figure of $59 million, $0.65.

    Don't look now but SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR  ) has become the best-performing stock in the solar industry. Over the past year, it's been better than fellow U.S.-based companies First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR  ) and SolarCity (NASDAQ: SCTY  ) , and far better than most Chinese manufacturers.     First Solar saw a huge drop in short interest over the past few weeks of March. The number of shares short declined by more than 1.8 million in the last two weeks of the month, putting short interest in First Solar at its lowest point in more than a year. Since the middle of August high, more than 48.4% of shares short have been covered.
